Your First Reformer Pilates Class: Everything You Need to Know Before You Walk Through Our Doors
Trying something new can feel intimidating. Most people aren't worried about the workout itself. They're wondering about all the little things.
What should I wear? Do I need special socks? Am I going to be the only beginner?
If you've been asking yourself those questions, you're not alone. We hear them all the time from first-time clients at Space 3 Yoga & Pilates. The good news? Your first class is probably much less intimidating than you're imagining.
Here's everything you need to know before you arrive.
Wear Something You Can Move Comfortably In
There's no need to buy a whole new workout wardrobe. Leggings, bike shorts, or fitted athletic pants paired with a comfortable tank or T-shirt are perfect. We recommend clothing that isn't too loose so your instructor can easily see your alignment and help you get the most out of each movement.
One small tip: avoid clothing with bulky zippers or buttons on the back since you'll spend part of class lying on the carriage.
Barefoot or Grip Socks? The Choice Is Yours
One question we hear all the time is, "Do I need grip socks?" At Space 3, the answer is simple: it's your choice.
Some clients love grip socks because they provide extra traction on the carriage, especially during standing exercises or when their feet tend to get sweaty. Others enjoy the warmth and comfort they provide during class.
On the other hand, many people prefer practicing barefoot. In fact, Joseph Pilates, the creator of Pilates, believed exercises should be performed barefoot whenever possible. He felt that direct contact with the equipment helped strengthen the feet, improve balance, and create a stronger connection between the body and the movement.
There isn't a right or wrong answer - just what feels best for you.
Grip Socks
Added traction and stability
Comfortable for cooler studios
A good option if you prefer extra grip
Barefoot
More natural connection to the Reformer
Helps strengthen the muscles in your feet
Honors the original Pilates method
If you're unsure, bring both your grip socks and your bare feet! After a class or two, you'll quickly discover which feels more comfortable for your body.
The Reformer Looks More Complicated Than It Feels
If you've only seen a Reformer online, it can look a little intimidating. Once you step onto it, though, it quickly starts to make sense.
The machine uses springs instead of weights, creating smooth, adjustable resistance that supports your body while still challenging your muscles. Throughout class you'll be lying down, sitting, kneeling, and standing as you move through a variety of exercises.
Our instructors handle the spring changes and guide you every step of the way. You never have to figure it out on your own.
A Few Things That Will Help Before Class
There isn't much preparation required, but a few simple things can make your first experience even better.
Eat a light meal or snack about an hour beforehand.
Bring a water bottle.
Arrive 5–10 minutes early so you have time to get settled and ask questions.
Most importantly, come with an open mind.
You don't need experience. You don't need to be flexible. You just need to show up.
You Won't Be the Only Beginner
This is probably the biggest concern we hear. Many people assume everyone else in the room has been doing Pilates for years. The reality is that every single person in that class had a first day, too.
At Space 3, our small class sizes allow instructors to get to know you, offer modifications when needed, and make sure you feel comfortable throughout class. Whether you're completely new to Pilates or returning after a long break, you'll never be expected to "keep up."
You'll simply work at the level that's right for you.
Expect to Feel Muscles You Didn't Know You Had
One of the most common things we hear after someone's first class is:
"That was completely different than I expected."
Reformer Pilates isn't about sweating as much as possible or leaving exhausted. Instead, it focuses on building strength, improving balance, increasing flexibility, and helping your body move better as a whole.
You'll likely discover muscles you haven't used in a while, especially through your core and hips, but you'll also leave feeling taller, stronger, and more connected to your body.
Ready to Give It a Try?
Starting something new always comes with questions, and that's okay. Whether you're looking to build strength, improve flexibility, recover from an injury, or simply find a workout you actually enjoy, we're here to help make your first class feel comfortable from the moment you walk through the door.
