CAN’T WIND DOWN AT NIGHT? WHY YIN YOGA MAY BE THE EVENING RESET YOU NEED
You know the feeling. You’re tired all day, finally climb into bed, and suddenly your brain decides it’s the perfect time to think about everything. Tomorrow’s schedule, the email you forgot to send, something you need from the grocery store, or a conversation you had three days ago. Your body is tired, but it hasn’t quite gotten the message that the day is over.
That’s part of what makes Yin Yoga such a welcome addition to a busy week. At Space 3 Yoga & Pilates in Mason, Ohio, our Yin classes offer something many of us don’t give ourselves permission to do very often: slow down and get quiet. If you’ve been looking for an evening yoga class, a way to balance more intense workouts, or simply an hour when nobody needs anything from you, Yin may be exactly what you’re looking for.
WHAT MAKES YIN YOGA DIFFERENT?
If your idea of yoga involves moving quickly from one pose to the next, Yin is going to feel very different. It’s a slow, quiet practice that takes place mostly close to the floor. Instead of flowing continuously, you settle into supported poses and stay there for several minutes at a time.
Bolsters and blocks help support your body so there’s no need to force a stretch or worry about what a pose is supposed to look like. There’s no racing to keep up with the person next to you, and you don’t need to arrive flexible. The goal is simply to find a position that works for your body, breathe and give yourself time to settle.
WHY YIN FITS SO WELL INTO A BUSY WEEK
Most of us spend our days sitting at computers, driving kids around, answering messages, running errands and mentally keeping track of whatever needs to happen next. Even our workouts often involve pushing, sweating or trying to accomplish something.
Yin asks for something different. The slower pace gives you an opportunity to focus on your breathing and notice where you may be carrying tension from the day. Many people find that deliberate shift leaves them feeling calmer and more relaxed afterward, which is one reason evening Yin Yoga can fit so naturally into a nighttime routine.
It can also be a great complement to the more active things you already enjoy. If you’re taking Reformer Pilates at Space 3, running, lifting weights, playing tennis or pickleball, or attending one of our more active yoga classes, your week probably already includes plenty of movement and muscular effort. Not every workout has to ask more from your body.
That’s one reason we love having both Reformer Pilates and yoga under one roof at Space 3. You might want the strength, stability and controlled movement of the Reformer one day and the stillness of Yin another. Both can have a place in a well-rounded routine.
THE SPACE IS PART OF THE EXPERIENCE
There’s a reason doing a few stretches beside your bed doesn’t always feel quite the same as taking a class. Walking into Space 3 gives you a chance to physically step away from the laundry, television, laptop and everything else competing for your attention at home.
For Yin, we keep the lighting dim and the music calm. Props are available throughout the practice, and the atmosphere is intentionally quiet and restorative. For an hour, you don’t have to decide what comes next. You can simply follow your instructor and be present.
NEW TO YOGA? YOU CAN START HERE
Yin Yoga is one of our most approachable classes. You don’t need previous yoga experience, you don’t have to know the names of the poses, and you certainly don’t have to become flexible before you walk through the door. Our instructors guide you through each position and help you use props to find an option that works for your body.
And Yin isn’t only for beginners. People who have practiced yoga for years often appreciate the opportunity to slow down and experience a completely different style of practice. Whether this is your first yoga class or your hundredth, you can make it your own.
GIVE YOURSELF AN HOUR TO DO LESS
We hear a lot about everything we should be doing to feel our best: move more, get stronger, eat well and get enough sleep. Maybe there’s room on that list for doing a little less, too.
